Virus Protection:Top 5 safe browsing tips
What you didn’t know, could kill your computer!! The internet is a haven for people with malicious intent. They spam, spoof, hack, phish and will do anything to get their hands on your personal and financial information. How do you stop it? Here are five safe browsing tips that are relevant in the current scenario:
1. Get your computer protected by an Antivirus program from a reputed vendor. Today, there are many fake anti-spyware/antivirus programs that keep popping up on your screen telling that the computer is infected and asking you to buy a particular program. Be-aware. These are fake, scams and spywares. None of the legitimate antivirus companies resort to such tactics. Get a good Computer Virus Protection program and update the program on a regular basis to get protection against latest threats.
2. Do not download free Music, Games, softwares or toolbars and do not install ActiveX controls from unknown websites. These sites are not secured properly and their security can be easily compromised by hackers.
3. Never-ever download an attachment from an email that comes from an unknown person. Even if the email is from your friend or relative, you can scan it with your Antivirus program.
4. Scan your computer on a regular basis. At least once a week. Most antivirus programs can schedule a scan to run automatically. Update your virus definitions and run windows updates on a regular basis.
5. Install a Popup blocker and do not click on popups while your are on the internet, always ‘X’ out of them.
Special Tip: When dealing with computer security don’t trust your intuition, call the support technician from your antivirus company.
Video Conference - The easy way
There are certain businesses on the Internet that still amaze me. Recently, i was searching for a collaboration tool to ‘talk and work’ with one of my marketing managers in India. I stumbled upon Nefsis, a site for business to business video conferencing. After reading their promising “how it works” page, i decided to try it out. Lucky for skeptics like me, they have a video conferencing free trial pack. The installation was very simple, but what caught and tamed the critic in me was the clarity and ease of use of this application. The best part is, you dont need any expensive equipment, it works fine with just your PC, webcam and Internet Connection. The free trial lasts 14 days, after which i have decided to purchase their reasonably priced service and take advantage of the flexibility that this wonderful service offers. Am really glad that there are still few companies on the Internet worth talking about.

How to choose a good Web Hosting Service?
The time is ripe for individuals and small business owners to earn money from the internet. New media like Blogs, Podcasts, personal web pages and social networking have helped the end users interact and have a voice on the internet that enables them to earn substantial profits. Even as the internet cloud gets clearer and user participation has increased, there are certain areas that are still dominated by huge internet companies of the yester years. One such domain is Website Hosting. This community profits by keeping the end-users in the dark.
My search for the best web hosting led me to do a lot of research. The result was NULL. I was not able to make up my mind. All the companies projected themselves pretty well and had competitive prices but not one had an edge over the other. I almost felt that they were all equally cynical in providing information about their services to the potential customer. This is where you can leverage the power of user ratings. Check out www.webhostingrating.com as their site contains all the information you need on choosing the right web host and also contains answers to every question you can possibly encounter during your quest for the best web hosting company.
I started searching for user reviews and ratings for web hosting services on their website. I needed a multiple domain hosting company with support for unlimited sites. I also wanted to host a blog and wanted to know about the best blog hosting companies. All my search and research on this website were powered by users and geeks and they have been very accurate in their reviews.
So my suggestion is that you make a list of requirements for your Website hosting, check the Web hosting services that offer you what you require and always go by the reviews given by real people, who have actually tried out the service instead of blindly believing a web host, his affiliate site or a partner site.
Instant On In Windows
When upgrading from XP to Vista , you might have noticed a change in the speed at which your computer works. It would have slowed down radically. Following such kinds of complaints, Microsoft has started taking surveys on select people to decide on whether Instant On much be designed for Windows 7. Instant On would not feature all of the functionalities of the full operating system but would probably boot the system within 15 seconds !!! I hated Windows Vista for its speed, driver problems and the space it occupies on the hard drive, but would say that if Windows 7 overcomes these problems, it would be a killer product !!!
Windows Drivers Encyclopedia
I was wandering like a rover in the internet for a ones stop site to get all the Windows Drivers that i wanted. There were a lot of sites that gave a lot of drivers specific to particular domains like sound, gaming etc. But nothing was as comprehensive as as Encyclopedia. It was then that my friend suggested this very alluring site - DriverLibrary.
This is one place where you get a conglomerate of all the drivers that you would need for your Windows based computer. The important point to be noted is that Driver-Library is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Let me tell you, this not just given away. Its a very coveted and prestigious issue for any business in the computer and internet market to be so certified by Microsoft. It is only given for professional excellence and consistent delivery of quality products.
The site flaunts a very neat, clean and simple design, austere in its aesthetics. On the first page you are allowed to choose from a category list as to which driver you would want to opt for; this could range from Printers, Cameras to Motherboards and Scanners. Once you enter into a category the site lets you choose a driver by the name of its manufacturer. Whats more - you could also run a free scan to spot the outdated drivers on your system. You could then update drivers. Talking of myriad drivers, Driver-Library offers you even Bluetooth Drivers!
What powers your favorite online game?
Ever wondered what powers your favorite online game? Yesterday i was playing PoxNora: Battlefield of the Immortals and was amused to find that it was powered by Java Web Start, the same technology that powers my P2P application. If you take a deeper dive inside this technology, you may find that Java Web Start has a Jnlp file type. Which means it run on Java Network Launching Protocol.
How easy was that to say? Do you have any clue as to what jnlp file type means or about Java Network Launching Protocol? What do you do when you get stuck up with new technological terminologies. Of course, a Google search. But more than 50% of the time you end on a wild goose chase on Google and are back to where you started. Its exactly under such circumstances that i stumbled upon www.backupanswers.com. In their own words, “Its a technical portal that aims at educating computer users about new technology.” Now, coming back to JNLP, i learnt that JNLP is an XML based technology for launching Java Executables on the web. Which means you can create an application at your end and serve it to millions of users around the world through their browser. So, in case you were wondering about web widgets, yes, they can also be powered by Java Web start and JNLP. This empowers applications to run on the browser and can be termed as the technology for the future.

Spam Racket Busted
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has busted one of the largest spam operation in the world. Your inbox would be lesser graced with spam for a few days! The spam operation of the accused reigned across China, US and New Zealand.
The spammers would send billions of emails to email IDs across the globe pitching for cheap enhancement and other drugs. Once an innocent user clicks on the link, the buying process begins. The website was hosted from a server in China and the drugs shipped from India. This proves that busting of the spam racket is just the tip of the iceberg.
FTC agents found it very hard to distinguish these spammers from genuine drug companies. The camoflauge was almost impeccable. But the undercover agents’ rigorous training proved to be a boon and the culprits, citizens of the US and New Zealand were nabbed swiftly. Spam is so prevalent in the internet that the FTC has received more than 3 million complaints till date, and counting. This only goes to show the scale of operation of spammers. Beware!
