Obamaites rule the Internet : “Obama the right brand!!”

Disclaimer: Entertainment Podium does not professionally endorse any candidate, Although personally, we love Senator Obama!! ;)

Am amazed at the fact that Barack Obama is able to churn out millions of supporters on the World WIde Web. Are there more number of Internet Savvy democrats in this country? or, is it just the Obama magic? Whatever be the reason, you can see the Internet Cloud clogged up with “We love Obama” sign boards. His You-Tube channel is very popular and some videos have had more than a million users staring at them. The best part is, Most of these users are outside of the United States. If United States is an independent company and Barack Obama is a Product/Brand, It would be the most Loved, popular and profitable companies in the world, Just because Barack Obama sells like hot cup cakes!!, not only in the US of A but also globally.

Coming back to the Obamaites on the internet, they are everywhere and as election day is coming closer, they run from Pillar to (blog)post singing his glory and seeking support. However, the point to be noted here is that people do this by choice as they yearn for the change. But why do people beleive in Obama? The reason? No prizes for guessing, His charisma and his ability to empathize and relate to people from all communities.

The Verdict: Obama is the right brand ambassador for United States of America to keep the “star spangled banner” flying high in the hearts of people around the world. As for the netizens, keep rooting for the change you beleive in!!

Stand-up comedians profit from election fever

Wherever there is news, there is a stand-up comedian waiting to capitalize. Stand-up comedy has gained lot of popularity since the birth of web2.0 as more people are able to view, appreciate and respond to healthy comedy. Political jokes, criticism, celebrity trashing are all very popular genres of stand-up comedy. But the one that really sells right now are election and election related jokes. Barack Obama, John McCain, Sarah Palin and anybody else who is feebly related to the elections have become the main targets of stand-up comedians.

One time when David Letterman played a top 10 George Bush moments video on his show, Bush reacted saying, “Any society where  people can make humor if their leaders and criticize them is a free society worth builiding.” Although  stand-up comedy is good and people enjoy it, popular stand-up comedians need to act more responsibly during the election time as they can adversely impact people’s judgement through their comedy. This is evident from the number of people who after seeing a stand-up comedy show got influenced into thinking that Sarah Palin is a big farce. Although i personally beleive that she is a big farce, thats for people to decide on their own, not for stand-up comedians to cue in!!

Personality Development Books: A marketing gimmick

Personality development books sell like hot cakes on the stands of any book store. I’m contemplating if I should pity their innocence, or loathe their ignorance - the ultra-optimists who buy these books! The naive people believe that they are eternally inspired and could shed pearls of wisdom on reading these books. Well, screw them all!

These books are such awful pieces of writing in farce, that I’m disgusted with the ideas promoted by them. They bank on the psychology of the emotionally vulnerable and the mentally susceptible to fatten their bank balances and public image. They spread this absurd idea about External Motivation. For God’s sake how can you be permanently enlightened by means that are alien to your mind. Motivation has to be necessarily internal and self driven; it is the quality of the self sufficient individual. Sustained levels of zeal and consistency in focus could be achieved only by the Self.

Tell me if I’m not right; and I raise this argument out of my own experience. Let say you finish reading such a blasphemous book today, you would be fully charged and pumped up the next day - this I totally agree. But two weeks down, are your energy levels still the same? One month down, are you not back to your own sweet self? Has the book made any change in you at all, in even the short run? This would probably happen to 99% of the bourgeoisie who read them. Well if you are among the other lucky microscopic minority, Kudos! If you do not agree with me, please tell me - would you be reading this sort of ludicrous parody every month till you die? Or do you suppose that you would get used to being efficient by prolonged reading of such mockery?

My point here is not to stress that these books are absolutely useless, but that they only help a very few. The masses are hardly effected. Some authors even go to the extent of twining their ridiculous views with spirituality. Perhaps they should file a patent for those theories :P If its the moral support that you want please be faithful to your religion. You could as well read the Bible, Koran or the Bhagavad Gita. Whatever little sense that our grotesque autors make - it would always be a minor subset of these materpieces!

Comments and criticism welcome!

Warren Buffet unperturbed by Recession

Even as recession is taking its toll on the common man, the stock market geek-Warren Buffet is making plans to increase his personal stake in American stocks. Buffet claims that he believes in his ideology and it works, “be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.”, as told to New York Times. His buying spree has so far cost him about $28 Billion out of which $3 Billion is an investment in stocks of General Electric Co. How does he do it? How does he splurge in Billions while you are counting Twenties that could make or break your day. The reason is simple enough, while you were young, buying more clothes, cars, beer, diamonds for your so-called girlfriend, Buffet was busy buying stocks!! He started out early and turned a failing textile business into a $180 billion holding company. So, take a cue from Buffet, Start early and make long term investments when you still can, maybe its you who i’ll write about during the next recession.

Aravind Adiga bags Booker Prize

Aravind Adiga, the 33-year old from Chennai, India has bagged one of the most prestigious awards in the English literary world - the 50,000 pound worth Man Booker prize! His first Novel “The White Tiger” achieved this feat for it is impeccable clarity in portraying the real India. You should find it an arduous and treacherous task to spot a structural flaw in his book.

When a first time novelist, the youngest of the 6 short-listed nominees bags the Booker prize, you definitely expect him to be overtly overwhelmed. But ice-berg Adiga was chill as the Arctic, if not indifferent. He is quoted to have said that the prize is amply important to his publisher - Simon & Schuster! Talk about curt pun and wit ;)

The White Tiger is all about the extraordinary portrayal of modern india. When most writers are mezmerized by the awe created by the rising of the eastern economies, namely India and China, Aravind illustrates the harsh and compelling realities faced by Modern Indians. In his debut work, Adiga not only strips the shimmer around the Indian growth miracle naked and exposes the rot beneath, but also portrays how a microscopic minority of people could subjugate the needs of a majority. The Great Indian Expose is well deserving the Booker Prize!

Madonna and Guy Ritchie fall out

The star studded pop star Madonna and her heart throb (not any more) and film maker Guy Ritchie made it public that they would end their 8 year long marriage. The divorce is on the cards. The financial settlement of the fortune each have made is not yet finalized. Though for a change this time, the woman is worth ten times the divorced groom! The fate of the two children they have, also hangs by the wire for the time being. The papparazzi have something interesting to hunt this winter ;)

Paul Krugman gets a Nobel Prize

You have seen this name very frequently in the pages of the New York Times. You would always connect him with Bush bashing. Paul Krugman, the very famous columnist, Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Princeton University and author/co-author of a dozen books in the same respect, received the Nobel Prize in Economics (2008) for his “analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity”. Krugman also predicted that a global economic crisis would occur before the Bush administration cleared the White House.

It is quite rare that a Nobel prize is awarded to a single person rather than a group of intellectuals. Krugman has performed such a feat. John Nash the mathematician (reminds you of “A Beautiful Mind”?) if you remember shared the Nobel in 1994 with two others.

Not to stain the work done by the well-deserving Krugman, its rumoured that he received it just so that the Bush administration and its pathetic state of economic affairs get twitted. If the rumours were to be confirmed by the Nobel committee to be true, it reflects in ill light, the integrity and intellectual rigor of the latter. Nevertheless, Krugman’s dedicated works in the field of economics is profoundly laudable and well deserving the Nobel Prize.

Rajinikanth in Politics, Pinch yourself:Is DDMMK for real?

Before you read further, this post is not about whether Tamil Nadu Superstar Rajinikanth is entering politics or not. Period. This is about yet another uncertain cloud that hangs over every major announcement from his camp.

Fans lauching DDMMK flag:But where's their Idol?

Rajini’s Political Party

Rajinikanth Aka Superstar Rajini has stirred the hornet’s nest yet again by leaving to speculation the finer details of his entry into politics. Although the actor has made no formal revelation about his foray into politics, his fans seem to have gone berserk by the meeting he has setup with leaders of his fan clubs around the state, scheduled on Oct 12th to discuss the possibility of floating a political or social community. His fans seem to have stretched things a tad too much by announcing the party name as DDMMK, abbreviation for “Desiya Dravida Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam” and have also painted the capital city red with posters of the party flag. It would come as a huge blow to his die-hard fans if Rajini backs out this time. But the big question is: will the on-screen tough guy hero be able to deliver his punch dialogues in politics?

New Google Guy:Hubert Chang??

Hubert Chang - Head Shot
Hubert Chang - Head Shot

Recent claims made by Hubert Chang has caused huge ripples in blogosphere. Every blogger wants to write his own version of Hubert Chang and his association with google. Nowadays, anything with brand Google on it seems to sell and bloggers are not far behind while capitalizing on it. Now talking about Hubert chang, lets not judge him by his looks, education or his sanity,or rather lack of it, but lets focus on what he has been doing all these years and why this sudden revelation about his past.

Hubet chang Claims in his video that he asked his name to be left out of the paper about Page Rank, sumitted by Larry and Sergey. The reason he gives for this is that he did not want to be associated with anything that would distract him while pursuing his Phd. Well, that’s a lost opportunity dude!! Rival Search provider Yahoo! founders Jerry Yang and David Filo must have gone through the same feeling that Hubert Chang is going through now. The Yahoo founders were approached by Larry and Sergey with proposals for a new search engine based on Page Rank, unfortunately the Yahoo guys were not as enthusiastic about it as they are today.

As for Hubert Chang, the Yahoo guys and millions of people around the world who took a bad choice or took the wrong turn in life, Isn’t it true  that “When Opportunity knocks, we are either out, or sleeping in!!”.

Charu Nivedita : A Rebel with a Vision

Charu Nivedita

Charu Nivedita

Charu Nivedita, I heard this name for the first time only few months back. I was traveling with a french friend of mine who happens to be this literature geek and he was boring me with details about Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde among other things. All of a sudden he pops in the name ,Charu Nivedita. I found myself all ears to what he was talking about. Come on!, a french guy comparing some of the best English authors and playwrights and pops in an Indian sounding name in the same breath!! My curiosity grew and a real conversation started taking flight. I wanted to know more about this guy who was a Tamil writer and yet had found ardent fans in a community that does not understand a word of tamil. After hearing my friend’s highly animated description of Charu and his works, i started wondering, Does good literature really have no barriers?

I decided to do some more research on this guy and a simple google search with the name “Charu Nivedita” produced about 11000 results, huh! pretty decent. But after reading some of the top search results i started getting a feeling that my friend might have been mistaken or misinformed about this author and his literary skills. But one word stuck to my mind and kept repeating itself. “Sex”. That was the word found on ever single article about Charu and it was not posted in good light. People were attacking this poor guy left, right and center for his views about sex and liberalization. Since i found those posts highly biased, i decided to do some old-school research and bought his new book, ZERO DEGREE, that was translated from his tamil best seller that went by the same name . That was kind of a revelation for me. In the past 25 years, I have lived in as many as six countries and was immediately  able to identify each character in Charu’s writings as the people i came across in different places, Charu had given a Tamil name to them, so that his Tamil readers could relate to it better. I was hooked!! This author has broken international language barriers and has given some of the best Global Tamil books ever.

But why was he disliked and disrespected by some of his colleagues from Tamil litarary world.  No prizes for guessing!! The authors who had till now kept their readers inside a small circle and who’s writings for the past ten years have been about run-of-the-mill traditional values and society imposed cultural restrictions were losing steam. They were neither able to digest nor keep up with the fresh ideas that Charu was propagandizing. To make matters worse, Charu went a step ahead and released ebooks of most of his Tamil works, something that is unheard-of in the tamil literary world. This new venture helped the industry tap into sections of Tamil readers living out of India.

To summarize, Charu’s writings have been inspiring young ignited minds as opposed to the other So-Called giants of Tamil Literature who have been capitalizing on the cobwebs built around the minds of people who refuse to beleive that GLOBALISATION is the next big thing.

You can catch Charu Nivedita and his most recent articles on his website, www.charuonline.com .
