Virus Protection:Top 5 safe browsing tips

What you didn’t know, could kill your computer!! The internet is a haven for people with malicious intent. They spam, spoof, hack, phish and will do anything to get their hands on your personal and financial information. How do you stop it? Here are five safe browsing tips that are relevant in the current scenario:

1. Get your computer protected by an Antivirus program from a reputed vendor. Today, there are many fake anti-spyware/antivirus programs that keep popping up on your screen telling that the computer is infected and asking you to buy a particular program. Be-aware. These are fake, scams and spywares. None of the legitimate antivirus companies resort to such tactics.  Get a good Computer Virus Protection program and update the program on a regular basis to get protection against latest threats.

2. Do not download free Music, Games, softwares or toolbars and do not install ActiveX controls from unknown websites. These sites are not secured properly and their security can be easily compromised by hackers.

3. Never-ever download an attachment from an email that comes from an unknown person. Even if the email is from your friend or relative, you can scan it with your Antivirus program.

4. Scan your computer on a regular basis. At least once a week. Most antivirus programs can schedule a scan to run automatically. Update your virus definitions and run  windows updates on a regular basis.

5. Install a Popup blocker and do not click on popups while your are on the internet, always ‘X’ out of them.

Special Tip: When dealing with computer security don’t trust your intuition, call the support technician from your antivirus company.

Video Conference - The easy way

There are certain businesses on the Internet that still amaze me. Recently, i was searching for a collaboration tool to ‘talk and work’ with one of my marketing managers in India. I stumbled upon Nefsis, a site for business to business video conferencing. After reading their promising “how it works” page, i decided to try it out. Lucky for skeptics like me, they have a video conferencing free trial  pack. The installation was very simple, but what caught and tamed the critic in me was the clarity and ease of use of this application. The best part is, you dont need any expensive equipment, it works fine with just your PC, webcam and Internet Connection. The free trial lasts 14 days, after which i have decided to purchase their reasonably priced service and take advantage of the flexibility that this wonderful service offers. Am really glad that there are still few companies on the Internet worth talking about.

Technology to the senior’s Rescue

Is your mother not at the best of her health and you have to spend more time at office? Or does your grand father cherish his independence living in seclusion but still wanting that extra bit of caress in case of an emergency? Are you a senior citizen feeling insecure about what or who might help you when your sugar level goes low to make you dizzy or unconscious as you are taking your morning jog? If your answers to any of these questions is even in the slightest of  affirmative tones, your stars are really good today!

BrickHouseAlert gives you the Medical Alarm facility! There are two interesting products that make me attentive. You should find some electronic devices in the market that need the user to push a button in case of an emergency. But what if your father does not have the strength to do so? That is why you have a FALL ALERT system that automatically senses that the person has fallen down and alerts emergency personnel right away. The other product is a bracelet that is GPS enabled, so you could spot a somnambulist relative or your dear one that suffers from Alzheimers. Any case, your dear old ones are sure going to get techie pretty soon!

You should read the reviews on the site BrickHouseAlert.com to know more of first hand experiences with the products. But its up to you to discover if the products are water proof ;)

Remote Management for USB Flash Drives

I came across the company Kangaru which developed a remote management system for USB flash drives. This seems to be really cool idea. The USB drive can be used as a key. This gadget looks like it is from a Mission Impossible movie or one that is good enough be used in the Pentagon.

Let me tell you about it first, then you can go all ‘WOW’. It is named as a Kanguru Defender. These drives are highly secure and AES hardware encrypted. It has an option of password protected storage. These drives can be remote managed by an administrator anywhere in the world. If any of these drives are lost, it can be immediately deleted. This is to make sure that the drive does not fall into the wrong hands as it might carry sensitive information. Passwords of the drives can be remotely reset by the administrator too. One of the added security features is that if the drive is not accessed in an X amount of days, then the drive is automatically deleted or blocked. It comes in various colors like red, blue, tan, yellow and green.

Kangaru Remote Management Console is a cool idea and the Kangaru Defender is an ultra cool gadget made for spies. ;)
