India’s first moon mission
India’s maiden mission to the moon Chandrayaan -1, blasted off from earth today morning from the Satish Dhawan Space centre in Sriharikota off Andhra Pradesh coast. Chandrayaan means “Moon Craft” in ancient Sanskrit. It blasted off at 6.20 am on the modified Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Chandrayaan will go to the moon and orbit it for the next two years. Chandrayaan will join Japan and China’s spacecrafts to map the surface of the moon for laying the groundwork for future Indian space missions. Let us wish India all the best on their first ever voyage to the moon.
India’s moon mission to see dawn
India’s moon mission - Chandrayaan (Moon Vehicle) - is all set to blast off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota on October 22, 2008. This newest space odyssey will put India in the elite league of nations who have carried out successful mission aimed at exploring the moon.
The unmanned mission would be India’s first exploration and planetary science mission. The spacecraft would take about 5 days to reach the moon and will be in a 100 kilometer polar orbit around it. The goals of this prestigious mission are to come up with a 3D map of the moon and to conduct chemical research regarding the concentration of different metals, materials and high atomic number elements on the surface of the moon.
